What I'm seeing this week

Worth a read this week: How a CNC machinist went from $18 to $36 an hour. Learning setups, offsets and G-code took him from $18 to $21.50. Adding manual programming got him to $23. The biggest jump, $26 to $36, came from interviewing with three shops and taking the best offer.

For reference, the median pay on our board right now is $33.50/hour for setup roles and $38.50/hour for programmers. Every role below carries a number so you can see where you stand.

SMI Metal Precision — Houston, TX (NEW)

  • 50-year-old, family-owned Houston shop with about 30 employees, building out a new second shift

  • Blue Cross Blue Shield medical with SMI covering 75% of the employee premium, a 401(k) with company match, and PTO starting at two weeks

"Dead nuts" — machinist shorthand for dead on, exact, zero deviation. These hats have it embroidered on the front, for anyone who holds themselves to that standard
