What I'm seeing this week

A shop in Lakewood, Colorado spent months trying to fill roles. Job boards, other recruiters, nothing worked.

Once they started working with us, they made four hires in the first two months: a machinist, two quality inspectors and a shop hand. I wrote up how it went in the Metron Machining case study.

Semco Carbon — Lorain, OH (NEW)

Senior CNC Machinist — $30–$38/hour

  • Has machined custom graphite and carbon composite parts since 1971, in a 45,000 sq ft shop

  • Haas horizontal and vertical mills with 4th/B-axis rotary tooling

  • Sets up and programs rotary work on multi-sided parts, designs tooling and fixtures, and trains junior operators

  • Mostly prototype and repair work, not long production runs

  • ISO 9001:2015 certified, serving diamond tool, electroplating, metal casting and solar/crystal customers

  • 3+ years of CNC milling required, 7+ preferred; U.S. citizenship required

West Engineering — Ashland, VA

Large Turning Machinist — $32–$38/hour (lead-level large-part candidates can talk above the range)

  • Custom job shop that's been around since 1919, in a climate-controlled shop near Richmond

  • Flatbed and slant-bed CNC lathes, including Okuma flatbeds, on Fanuc controls

  • Parts up to about 111 inches long and 10 inches in diameter, in aluminum and steel

  • You set up and program your own low-volume, one-off and short-run jobs from prints

  • Monday–Thursday, 10-hour days (6:00 AM–4:30 PM), with a night shift (3:30 PM–2:00 AM) available; Friday overtime is typical

  • Employee health premium paid 100% by the company, 401(k) with a 50% match on the first 5%, and company-paid life insurance

  • Customers include DuPont and several defense contractors

ASM Equipment — Holt, FL (NEW)

Lead CNC Machinist — $25–$32/hour, with room to negotiate for a highly skilled machinist

  • Industrial machine shop building heavy equipment for the sawmill and wood-products industry; says it's growing

  • Haas VF-10 (CAT 50) and VF-4 Super-Speed vertical mills, plus a Hwacheon CNC lathe

  • Manual machines too: Lion and LeBlond engine lathes and a Bridgeport mill

  • Day shift, Monday–Friday, with occasional overtime

  • 3+ years of manual lathe and CNC machining preferred; Haas/Fanuc programming is a plus

  • Employer-supported health insurance, $10,000 life insurance, and a benefit bank for dental, vision, disability and accident coverage

"Dead nuts" — machinist shorthand for dead on, exact, zero deviation. These hats have it embroidered on the front, for anyone who holds themselves to that standard
