"Let's talk about machining PTSD"

Let’s talk about machining PTSD. Have you ever worked with someone like this??

Top comments include:

  • “During my tool and die apprenticeship the older toolmakers used love throwing something at the wall when you were touching off on a surface grinder. Definitely had my share of scares”

  • CEO used to bang on back of machine till I hit Estop on a beco thread! Scraped part, tool and backlash! No more horseplay from that day”

  • When I was a fresh behind the ears after my first crash.”

  • “Everything changes when crashing a manual machine”

  • “Had a VF2 code glitch the probing cycle once. Probe got pancaked. Only cost $4000 in damage. Nothing bad. But man, still pucker up when that probe indicates that first surface.”

  • “I do all of my own programming and setups, that green button can be terrifying!”

Would you take an $8 per hour pay check

Top comments include:

  • “Don't ever go to a company that will pay more later. It DOESN'T happen. They either pay upfront or they can find someone else. Plenty of manufacturing jobs out there for you to have to deal with that crap. Also, get your finances figured out where you don't have to survive on OT. OT is never a guarantee and should not be a basis of finding a job.”

  • “If you make the change get it in writing prior to anything. How long before review, and what are the actual documented benchmarks to get the higher pay or movement up. The grass is not always greener, and promises are still nothing but promises. Proceed with caution.”

  • “Should go from 40 to 50. Never go backwards. That's a part of the reason why owners think they don't have to pay more reasonable wages.”

  • “$8/hr cut is way too much, I wouldn't even counter except to say that you really need to be at 40 or above. If they were serious about incentive increases, it needs to be in writing with timelines and specific KPIs. But a cut would be a non starter for me ESPECIALLY if your going from production to management.”

  • “If they can pay you the extra eight dollars later, they can pay it today. If you don’t measure up to their expectations leave.”

  • “Stay at the 40 hour week, we will never be on our death bed saying is wish I worked more! Side jobs when needed are a help in place of overtime.”

  • “Ask for an additional 10% of the company net profit, paid quarterly, tell them that way they risk nothing, if you make them a lot of money( which it sounds like you will) then your pay goes way up, but that also means so does theirs, Ibe put that deal in place in several of the places I've managed and it's always worked out well, if they don't want to do that tell them to pound sand, you can replace them as a potential employer easier than they can find highly skilled people....”

What Is This Tool Called?
